HIGHLAND PARK – …the burned out hulk of a Payless Shoesource at Woodward and Tuxedo … (is a)  hot spot for fish lovers.

In February the Highland Park location joined the first Fresh Fish House that has been run at 8 Mile & Wyoming for seven years.

Camille Travis of Detroit is a repeat customer. She was buying a dinner of catfish, French fries , and okra.

“Besides the service, always a friendly face, the food is fresh and piping hot,” Travis said. “Actually, I work for Boy Scouts of America (on West Warren near Trumbull in Detroit) and we have a runner who regularly gets food from Fresh Fish.”

Customers can purchase fish ranging from salmon to pickerel and catfish, perch, buffalo and bass, clams, oysters or crab cakes and take it home to cook or have it cooked on the spot by Almass and his nine workers.

A catfish nugget dinner is $7.99. An ocean perch sandwich is $4.29. Sides include coleslaw at $1.29, okra at $1.69 or hush puppies, onion rings, potato salad, macaroni salad and French fries from $1.29 to $1.69.

Almas said his most popular item is shrimp. Another big seller is catfish. A 5 piece dinner with coleslaw and French fries is $6.79.

“When you have good quality, people are going to come and get it.”
