It’s much easier to cook fish frequently if you keep some of these pantry supplies on hand. Whether you order online, get a surprise gift from a neighbor or catch it yourself, it’s quick and easy to say “fish for dinner!â€
In your cupboard:
- Olive, canola, or safflower oil
- Fish-fry mix
- Shrimp-batter mix
- Garlic powder, or chopped garlic in a jar
- Herbs and spices in jars: dill weed, coarse-ground black pepper, thyme leaves, tarragon leaves, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, ginger, curry powder
- Bottled clam juice
- Yellow or white cornmeal
- Jar sweet red peppers
- Canned water chestnuts
- Soy sauce
- Sesame seed
- Small cans stewed tomatoes and tomato sauce
- Bottled lemon and lime juices (look for the kinds that include ground peel—tastier!)
- Basmati or other tasty rice
- Linguini or spaghetti
- Italian or Japanese-panko breadcrumbs
In your freezer:
- Chopped spinach
- Oriental stir-fry vegetables
- Basic fish and shellfish stocks
In your refrigerator:
- Butter (keep frozen if you use it only occasionally)
- Sesame oil
- Dry white wine
- Dry sherry or white vermouth
- Onions
- Garlic
- Fresh herbs
